Black Joy Farm

Black Joy Farm, formerly known as Libertad Urban Farm, is the result of a 7-year community-led campaign to create a radical food-growing green space in the South Bronx. We have solidified the space as a safe, healthy, bold space where MaGes are nurtured to be their full selves, un-policed and judgment-free.

Not only do MaGes, especially cash-poor, low-income, and immigrant MaGes, need bold spaces to live, love, and learn in, but they often suffer disproportionately more from hunger and food access, which are symptoms of gendered poverty and economic exclusion rooted in racism and sexism.

Too often, they are faced with choosing between housing, clothing, schooling, and medical costs; food is not often seen as a priority, and cheap, calorie-deficient foods that flood cash-poor Black communities are the accessible and affordable option. Black Joy Farm and our buying club offer an alternative that enriches the overall health of folks, both emotionally and physically. Black Mages have helped to grow and give away hundreds of pounds of food.
